If You Have Lower Back Pain, Don’t Chase “Too Much Hugging Feel”!

Many people ask me when their back starts to hurt:
👉 “Should I buy a mattress with very strong contouring and wrapping?”

Honestly? Not necessarily — you might even choose the wrong one.

① For back pain, support matters more than contouring
A strong hugging feel ≠ good support.
If a mattress only feels soft and sink-in comfortable,
but doesn’t provide enough support,
your lower back will sink over time,
putting more pressure on the spine and causing long-term soreness and pain.

② Comfort is NOT the same as contouring
Comfort can include contouring,
but good contouring does NOT guarantee real comfort.
Many memory foam or roll-packed mattresses feel very “huggy” at first,
but if the support is weak, the waist area collapses easily.
You may feel fine during the day,
but wake up with lower back pain in the morning.

③ A good mattress should be: soft with support, firm without stiffness
Support does NOT mean “the harder, the better.”
Very hard materials like coconut coir or jute don’t sink,
but their strong counterforce can also stress the spine.
True support means holding your body up — not pushing back against it.

④ If you have back pain, choose medium or slightly firm
For most people, medium or medium-firm mattresses work best.
They support the waist properly without feeling stiff or pressure-heavy,
which is far more back-friendly in the long run.
